You'll find us in Weardale, on the A689, within easy reach of Durham, Newcastle and Alston

We are located at 48 Front Street in the heart of Frosterley village.  We are on the south side of Front Street, which is the main road through the village.  Frosterley is located mid-way between the villages of Stanhope and Wolsingham on the A689 in County Durham, about 14 miles west of Durham.  The camping barn is situated in a quiet courtyard behind Cromer House, and access to it is by the gently sloping paved driveway to the left of the main house.

Cycling

We're on the North Pennines AONB Wheels to the Wild cycle route, and close to the C2C (from Whitehaven or Workington to Sunderland or Tynemouth) and Walney to Wear and Whitby cycle routes (W2W).

Bus/Train services

The camping barn is close to bus stops for the 101 service that comes through Frosterley via Wolsingham from Crook and Bishop Auckland and goes further up the dale to Stanhope and St. John's Chapel. There is also an X21 Saturday service from Frosterley to Newcastle.  And there are connections by bus from Crook and Bishop Auckland to Durham, Darlington, Consett and Newcastle/Gateshead.  The local bus timetables are available online at the Durham County Council website.

Bishop Auckland has a railway station with a connection to the national mainline system at Darlington. The Weardale Railway, an independent company, already provides a local tourist service from Frosterley to Wolsingham and Stanhope.

Arriving by car

If you have SatNav set it to Frosterley (N54o43.659W1o57.579) and it will take you straight to us as we are more or less in the centre of the village.  Don't use our postcode as SatNav has a tendency to sent you to neighbouring Wolsingham.

We are about a 30 minute drive from the A1M, travelling northbound.  Take exit 58 (signposted for Weardale and Darlington) and follow the A68 through West Auckland, Toft Hill and Fir Tree.  At the roundabout just north of Fir Tree, turn left on to the A689.  Frosterley is about 3 miles beyond Wolsingham.

Travelling southbound on the A1, there are a choice of routes, but for the most scenic take the exit for the A69 to Corbridge.  After about 15 minutes, about 2-3 miles before Corbridge, turn left on to the A68 (signposted Darlington).  Continue on the A68, through Castleside, and after about 10 minutes look out for signposts to the right to Wolsingham.  If you miss the first turning, you'll have another opportunity in Tow Law and later still at the Crook/Wolsingham roundabout.  All these turnings will bring you on to the A689, where you should turn righ.  Frosterley is about 3 miles beyond Wolsingham.

The driveway down to the rear courtyard - where the camping barn is located - narrows to a 2 metre gap at the bottom.  This is wide enough for us to drive our family runabout with its large wing mirrors through quite easily, but not wide enough for our builder's Transit pick-up!   Please drive forwards into the courtyard and into the garage opening on the right. Then you can reverse into one of the two parking spaces at the far end of the courtyard. Please do not try to reverse down the drive.  If you have booked sole use of the barn and are arriving in one car, you can simply park in the driveway.
